MEE - Multistate Essay Examination

The Multistate Essay Examination (MEE) is an essay examination. This exam consists of 6 scored essay questions which must be completed within 3-hours. It's advised to spend 30 minutes on each question in order to have time to answer them all.

MEE Basics

The MEE contains more than 6 essay questions. However, the jurisdiction will usually select 6 total to be asked during the exam. Test takers should contact their jurisdiction to confirm the number of essay questions that will be asked.

The MEE covers topics such as corporations, family law, federal civil procedure, sales, trusts and future interests, decedents' estates, conflict of laws, commercial paper, and agency and partnership.

The purpose of the MEE is to ensure candidates can effectively communicate in writing. The essays must present an analysis of the issues in a clear and organized manner.

This exam is administered two times a year (once in February and once in July) in participating jurisdictions.

MEE Jursidictions

The MEE is not as widely accepted as other bar exams. Please visit the National Conference of Bar Examiners site for more information on the MEE and the jurisdictions that require it.

Please refer to the jurisdiction you are seeking admission in for further details on the particular requirements you must meet to prove competence to practice. The MPT is only one of a number of requirements for admission to the bar.
