The MCAT exam helps the admissions counselors at medical schools gauge whether or not a candidate has a good chance of success in medical school. Other factors that play a role include past degrees, grade point averages, coursework, and recommendations. If you are trying to get into a good medical school, it is imperative that you get the best score you can on the MCAT.
The MCAT exam is given several times throughout the year between late January and early September. You should apply to take the exam the year you are applying for medical school if not earlier. Most medical schools will accept MCAT scores from two or three years before applying.
You may take the exam up to 3 times in one year. Therefore, if you don't get the score you want, you may re-take it within that same year provided you gave yourself enough time.
